Domaine de Vénus
Côtes du Roussillon
Roussillon is the “other” South of France. Here among the foothills of the Pyrenees is Domaine de Vénus.
A group of intrepid wine lovers decided to create the estate in one of the highest villages and challenging terroir in Côtes-du-Roussillon : Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet. Their vineyards are not all in one location. In fact they comprise of 30 hectares spread over 60 different vineyards in Maury and Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet. This spread allows for wines from Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes and Maury.
The domain has since acquired 15 organically grown hectares of vines in 2015. It has then started a general conversion to organic farming in order to ensure better respect for the land and to improve the quality of the wine.
The soil is predominantly black schist (slate) and granite. There is also the extremely windy Tramontane that blows almost 300 days of the year. These along with the high elevation vineyards tend to produce some excellent wine.
Jean-François Negre is the project manager. After owning for more than 20 years the Domaine de l’Ile Margaux in Bordeaux, he decided to move to Roussillon in 2003, confident in the regions ability to produce quality wines.
Nathalie Abet joined in 2005 as the Cellar Master and it is her deft hands that make some of the most elegant wines from this region.
